Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) Assemblies
Expert RPZ Valve Inspections and Code-Compliant Installations
RPZ valves — also known as Reduced Pressure Zone assemblies — are mission-critical devices in any plumbing system where contamination risks are present. These assemblies are specifically engineered to prevent backflow caused by pressure differentials that occur during main breaks, hydrant use, or sudden demand spikes. Without an RPZ valve in place, hazardous substances such as fertilizers, pesticides, industrial cleaning agents, or bacteria-laden water can reverse-flow directly into the potable water system. That’s why RPZs are required by law in all cross-connection scenarios where the public water supply could be compromised.
Our licensed technicians at Drain & Plumbing Services provide precision installation and annual certification of RPZ valves for both residential and commercial systems. Whether you're managing a healthcare clinic off Milwaukee Avenue, a food processing facility near Wolf Road, or a retail complex along Lake Cook Road, we ensure your backflow assemblies are installed correctly, tested on schedule, and meet all municipal and IEPA standards. From permitting and inspection paperwork to equipment replacement and emergency servicing, we handle it all with the accuracy and professionalism Wheeling property owners depend on.
DPS Will Help You With Backflow Inspection and Paperwork
In Wheeling and throughout Lake and Cook Counties, the use of RPZ assemblies is regulated under Illinois EPA standards and enforced locally through municipal plumbing inspections. We also submit all necessary documentation directly to your city or village water department, taking the guesswork off your plate. Whether you’re upgrading an outdated backflow preventer or installing a new assembly for a commercial build-out, we ensure complete compliance, safety, and efficiency.

When Are RPZ Valves Required?
Reduced Pressure Zone assemblies are required in any setting where a cross-connection could allow contaminated water to flow back into the public water supply. These high-risk scenarios include irrigation systems, fire sprinkler lines, commercial boilers, chemical mixing stations, medical equipment, and any plumbing configuration where back-siphonage or back-pressure may occur. In communities like Wheeling and throughout Lake and Cook Counties, these devices are mandated by local plumbing codes to protect the health and safety of the public.
Even small fluctuations in water pressure — due to firefighting activity, hydrant flushing, or a main break — can create the conditions for backflow. Without a properly functioning RPZ assembly in place, these pressure drops could allow dangerous substances like fertilizers, cleaning agents, or bacteria-laden water to contaminate your entire system — and in some cases, the city supply.
RPZ valves act as a physical barrier and pressure control point, ensuring flow stays safe and unidirectional.
Annual RPZ Backflow Testing Near Wheeling, IL
Under the Illinois Plumbing Code and regulations from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), all RPZ backflow prevention assemblies must be tested every 12 months by a licensed and certified backflow inspector. This ensures the internal check valves, relief valves, and pressure zones are functioning as designed.
At Drain & Plumbing Services, we perform thorough testing, identify signs of wear or malfunction, and file compliance reports with local water authorities on your behalf. If your system fails, we can repair or replace the assembly promptly to prevent water service interruptions or legal penalties. We proudly serve residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal clients in and around Wheeling, IL.

Avoid Costly Repairs and Property Value Loss

Routine testing ensures you stay ahead of issues and helps protect the long-term value of your home or commercial asset.
